In recent years, social media platforms have grown and grown. Facebook and Twitter are social media outlets that dominate the space on an enormous level. The popularity of social media has grown dramatically among consumers due to its ease of use and availability to anyone who has Internet access. Business owners are eager to ensure that social media is applied in their marketing strategies. According to recent research, two thirds of companies say that social media offers huge opportunities for business development.
In July 2010, the number of people using Facebook reached an unbelievable 500,000,000,000 users, making Facebook the undisputed leader of the worldwide phenomenon known as social media. According to recent research, Facebook is the second most visited website in the
UK. In fact, 1 in 6 web pages viewed in the United Kingdom was a Facebook page. Therefore, as Facebook continues to evolve, the benefits for companies to participate in marketing strategies utilizing Facebook are endless.
Companies can create their own company ‘page’ on Facebook and customers and suppliers can share their experiences, post comments and can promote special offers, news and more importantly, the link to the company’s website. In addition, if a Facebook user “likes” your
company or page, he or she will be updated periodically by your company whenever you post an item on your profile. This will keep your company and its products fresh in the minds of many interested consumers.
Another huge social media platform is Twitter. As of June 2010, there were approximately 125 million people using the online service. Twitter allows people and organizations to send frequent, short updates to their followers. Twitter is an extremely valuable tool to organizations large and small, as it is much more immediate and interactive than any online channel available and therefore can greatly boost your company’s visibility.
