 January 2002 - Extra

  A LITTLE HOUSEKEEPING

* HIGH HUMILITY QUOTIENT: I spent a great deal of time creating the January issue of Communication Expressway. Other deadlines loomed, and I allowed myself get pushed into a "rush" mode.

When filling out the form to send the e-zine to you, I left out the Subject Line information, and a default sub-heading, "jethro," went in the area instead.

I overlooked one of the most important aspects of the e-zine: good communication. What's that phrase about haste making waste? You'll find the last issue at www.ossweb.com/ezine-archive-2.html

* WINDOWS KEY KEYSTROKE TIPS: Thanks to Karen Ann Drebes of Sources for Sources, Inc. www.source4sources.com, here are a few popular keystroke tips for those with the Windows key on their keyboards:

  • Winkey (alone) displays Taskbar and Start menu
  • Winkey + F = Finds files or folders
  • Winkey + Tab = Cycles through the Taskbar buttons
  • Winkey + E = Opens Explorer
  • Winkey + R = Opens Run
  • Winkey + M = Minimizes all open windows
  • Winkey + M + Shift= maximizes all open windows

* NO MORE NORTHERN LIGHT: Northern Light closes its search engine to the public on January 16.

* TOP TEN WEB SITES: If you want to analyze the components of an effective Web site, you might want to bookmark this article. Andrew Starling, using ratings offered by Nielsen/ NetRatings and Jupiter Media Metrix, looks at fonts, colors, links, navigation, titles, page width, JavaScript, CSS and file size.

"Through analysing this convergence," he says, "we can come up with a set of 'best practice' guidelines, based on the principle that if the Web's most successful sites do things a certain way, there's a good chance it's the best way to do it.

"Since Web designers are rebels at heart, it's unlikely that anybody will turn these guidelines into firm rules that must be slavishly obeyed. But in any art form, rebellion usually works best when you know the conventions and are aware that you're breaking them." http://wdvl.internet.com/Authoring/Design/TopTen2001/

* WANT TO IMPROVE YOUR BUSINESS COMMUNICATION LEVEL?
Don't miss this excellent article by Martin Lindstrom: It's the detail that counts: www.clickz.com/brand/brand_mkt/article.php/954261

* SURVEY Don't forget to take this month's brief survey at
www.ossweb.com/survey2.html. It asks what you would do if you received a somewhat confusing e-mail.
