  INTRO

* Happy new year! I hope 2006 is full of creativity, flexibility, and joy.

* Thesaurus. Thesaurus. Thesaurus. There! I spelled it correctly. Sorry about the typos in my last ezine.

* My word of the month is "snarky," which I spotted in BL Ochman's fabulous blog. If you want to know what's next online, take a look at http://whatsnextblog.com/newsletter/

* Sorry to announce the passing of a wonderful person, Will Johnson, of http://www.netprofitnow.com. Loved that guy. I'll miss his wit, enthusiasm, and talent. He was generous with all three.

WILL JOHNSON TRIBUTES

When I first heard about the untimely death of Will Johnson, I was stunned.

Will's hard work got one of my websites ranked highly in most of the major search engines. The sales income that resulted helped make the down payment for the house I'm now sitting in.

But I'm not just sitting around here. Will wouldn't have wanted any of us to do that.

In fact, his death is motivating me the way that the death of one of my college roommates motivated her two teenaged children.

The son is now in his freshman year at Juilliard, and is already in the school's orchestra. That seldom happens in one's first year. While he was in high school, he was heavily recruited by music schools all over the country. And, I believe, his percussion work improved greatly after his mother died.

And the daughter finished the year in which her mother died with a 4.0 average. She continues to be a top student in her high school.

So, I'm going to be like them. I will answer this tragedy with higher levels of excellence.

Will would approve.

I had the pleasure of working with Will when I referred him to several of my own clients.

Will was a joy to work with - his enthusiasm for his work and for life in general was infectious. He was an optimistic man who generated lots of loyalty and affection from his clients.

Will is going to be sorely missed by many people, not only for his professional aptitude but for his love of life.

My friend and colleague, William Johnson, 60, has died of a cerebral hemorrhage. He was one of the first online friends I made when I started working on Internet marketing in 1995. And he was one of the first, and always one of the best of the search engine experts. He designed my first website, free of charge, to help me get started.

He taught me a lot and he made me laugh. We'd lost touch, but I am deeply saddened by the news of his death.

I am at a very fortunate point in my life. My parents, brothers, sisters, niece and nephews are alive and well. My friends have had their problems, but they are all doing fine, as am I. Somehow, you just expect that people you care about will always be there. But they won't. So give out some extra hugs today. Pick up the phone and call an old friend. Tell them you love them. Don't put it off.

SEARCH ENGINE OPTIMIZATION

In November, we talked about search engine optimization, and one of my subscribers, Peggi Ridgway (http://www.wordpix.com/), responded:

Your comments on Search Engine Optimization were thoughtful and stimulating, especially since I optimize my clients' web pages regularly.

It's important to remember that the nature of SEARCH - whether it's in Google or elsewhere - is text-based. If we want our web pages to come up in searches people conduct at their favorite search engines, we must optimize the text we place on our web pages.

SEO works in that it gets the web page into the search engine database, based on its optimized text. If you also promote the website and your product using a variety of promotional tools, on an ongoing basis, continually driving people to your website and if you get links from other sites with related products, your work will pay off. It takes a multi-faceted approach, and every promotional tool must be used.

GRAMMAR QUESTION OF THE MONTH - Numerals & letters in run-in lists

Question: When I'm using a run-in list in text, what kind of punctuation do I use? What kind of punctuation precedes the list? And what kind of punctuation is used within the list?

Answer: Enclose numerals (1, 2, etc.) and letters (a, b, etc.) in parentheses. No punctuation precedes the first parenthesis if the last word of the introductory material is a verb or a preposition. If the introductory material is an independent clause, use a colon to precede the first parenthesis.

The items are separated by commas unless any of the items require internal commas, in which case separate all items by semicolons.

TECH TIPS BY TERENCE KIERANS - EXCEL AND PUBLISHER

EXCEL

FITTING THE ROW HEIGHT TO YOUR TEXT
Often you find the need to put more text in a cell than can be easily displayed. You can widen the column to fit your text, but this is not always practical, or advisable. Instead, you can wrap the text within the cell, and then the cell height will be increased to display all the text. Follow this:

1. Select the cells to be formatted.
2. Choose Format/Cells. This will display the "Format Cells" dialog box.
3. Click the Alignment tab.
4. Select the "Wrap Text" check box.
5. Click OK. However, the row height will only increase automatically if you haven't previously explicitly specified the row height. If the height doesn't expand to fit the contents of the cell, do the following after completing the previous steps:
6. Select the row(s).
7. Choose Format/Row. Excel displays a submenu.
8. Choose AutoFit from the submenu.
The text should now be wrapped within the cell and all text visible.

MS PUBLISHER

BRUSHLESS FORMATTING
Using the Format Painter to copy formatting from one Publisher object to the next is not even necessary - there is an easier way.
*Right-click the formatted object and drag it to the object you want to format.
*From the Shortcut menu select "Apply Formatting Here". The formatting will be instantly applied from the source object to the target object.

1. WHAT IS WHOIS? Tracking who owns a Web site.

2. PLACE ALL GRAPHICS IN ONE DIRECTORY: Google's free program, Picasa, helps you instantly find, edit and share all the pictures on your PC. Every time you open Picasa, it automatically locates all your pictures (even ones you forgot you had) and sorts them into visual albums organized by date with folder names you will recognize. You can drag and drop to arrange your albums and make labels to create new groups. But there's more: you can burn CDs right from the program, then review them in a quick slide show. Make labels on pix, plus edit each photo in a user-friendly way.

The customer doesn't care. The complexity of your organization is not your customer's problem. It's yours."
