Business protocol for folding letters

Did you know there’s a business protocol for folding letters? Someone contacted me recently and wanted to know the right way for a letter-size piece of paper to be folded. Here’s what I found out:

For 8 1/2 x 11 paper that is going in a #10 envelope, or other stationery with a No. 9 or Monarch envelope, or a No. 6 3/4 envelope, Gregg Reference Manual (1391) says:

  1. Bring the bottom third of the letter up and make a crease.
  2. Fold the top of the letter down to within 3/8 inch of the crease you made in step 1. Then make the second crease.

The creased edge made in step 2 goes into the envelope first.
