Ask Judy Question #8

Dear Judy: I've heard that just about anyone can start a lucrative business on the Internet. I read this constantly in the e-mail messages I get. Explain why.

Thanks in advance!

        Signed...Money Hungry in Massachusetts

Response from Judy Vorfeld

Dear Money Hungry:I've never met Just About-Anyone, but I've met many people who, in desperation, quit their jobs, bought a computer, and began sending e-mails to people like me asking for employment. Would these same people do the same thing on a local basis? Yes. I've met some of them, as well. This entire idea of starting a small business has been so glorified that people don't realize what is involved prior to their opening the doors (whether it be in a mall, their home office, or on the Internet).

It's especially traumatic when people are being laid off faster than an ant family goes after food. Why don't more advisors say, "Do you have a year to put a plan together and do the necessary groundwork?" In some cases, they do, and the people (having just been laid off, or fearing layoff, or hating their work situation, or having just had a baby) think, "Well, that may be okay for some people, but I don't have the time. And I am certainly skilled at *you fill in the blank*."

This isn't about skill, but about getting solid information from many different areas and putting it together wisely. If you're really interested in making money with your own business, and are willing to work extremely hard, drop by online sites like Entrepreneur.com, Business Know How, and Smallbusiness.com. There are many good sites. And join good forums and discussion lists. Become part of some of these communities. Sometimes you find you can be extra helpful in a given area. Other times you end up with people willing to mentor you in one area or another until you become a bit more established. There are a few people around the Internet with honest motivations!

Some people are so organized and connected that their business will begin to take off in just months. Others may take much longer. There are many variables. If you're determined, don't give up, but above all, don't believe empty promises. Take your determination and blend it with common sense. Let your cup run over with other people's wisdom!
